The Healthcare Challenge Program is designed to fuel innovative advancements in the healthcare industry by fostering strategic partnerships between promising startups and leading enterprises. After a rigorous three-round judging process, 380 healthcare applications were evaluated. A two-day, in-person live pitch event followed, where healthcare challenge partners—MassMutual, Novo Nordisk, Point32Health, Takeda, and Vertex—extended offers to nine startups for potential partnership opportunities.
“The intersection between health and wealth is becoming more apparent than ever. As a life insurer, we sit right at this convergence and are constantly looking to offer innovative products and services to help people better understand and protect their health and well-being,” Adam Fox, Head of Distribution Technology & Data Science of MassMutual said. “Once again, this year’s cohort has inspired us, and we are excited to be partnering with three startups who are making a positive impact in HealthTech.”
The program, which runs now through March 2025, will provide a select group of high-potential, high-impact healthcare startups with intensive, one-on-one collaborations with our challenge partners to tackle industry-specific challenges like digital and mobile health, AI in healthcare, health equity and access, medical devices and wearables, chronic disease management, and more.
“Transformational change happens when innovative thinking and diverse perspectives come together,” said Johanna Jobin, Global Head of Environment and Sustainability at Takeda. “By partnering with MassChallenge, and pioneering companies like LabCycle and Impact Recycling, we can drive more impactful solutions across our value chain and the healthcare ecosystem, as part of our commitment to a net-zero future. Together, we’re creating a more sustainable world that supports the health of people and the planet.”
With most of the cohort comprised of first-time founders, the MassChallenge team is committed to providing these entrepreneurs with the resources, network, and mentorship they need to succeed. These intentional, challenge-driven partnerships yield tangible results, including pilots, proofs of concept, and long-term engagements. By fostering collaboration between startups and enterprises, The MassChallenge Healthcare Program empowers startups to achieve sustainable growth while helping enterprises maintain their innovative edge.
Startup and challenge partner collaborations are tailored to specific needs, expertise, and strategic priorities, always with the goal of startup success. MassChallenge’s Healthcare Program plays a pivotal role in the healthcare ecosystem, connecting and championing startups worldwide. Since 2016, over 200 startups have participated in MassChallenge’s health-related programs (Pulse, HealthTech, Healthcare).
“Collaboration between startups and large enterprises is critical to the future of healthcare innovation. We’re excited to continue our work with MassMutual, Vertex, and Point32Health, and welcome our new Healthcare partners Novo Nordisk and Takeda. These true leaders in the field are engaging partners for entrepreneurs,” said Gaurav Manchanda, Chief Program Officer at MassChallenge. “Such partnerships are essential to accelerating the development and implementation of groundbreaking solutions that address pressing health challenges, improve patient outcomes, and make healthcare more accessible and effective. We have an outstanding group of startups this year – we look forward to helping them grow.”
The 2024 Healthcare Program will culminate on March 27 with an in-person showcase during which startups will present their groundbreaking solutions to a distinguished audience of investors, industry leaders, and potential partners.
